“We come to know that there are many learned persons in your court. So, kindly send us a pot full of knowledge”.
‘Sending a pot full of knowledge…?’
At first, Akbar got angry over this odd request. He was well aware that, the king was only mocking at him. Yet, he found that there is no fun in getting upset on this matter. Because, immediately the king will say,”Why should the emperor be upset? Had he been spreading rumours that he has got knowledgeable persons with him?”
Hen, he realized that, he should not get upset but, should teach him a lesson.

He said to himself,”Further, a thorn could only be removed by a thorn”. He called Birbal and showed him the letter. He said,”Birbal, he asks a pot full of knowledge. Can you send it?”
Birbal replied without any hesistation”Only a pot full of knowledge? We shall even send him a cart full of knowledge”.
“Alright. First bring me a pot full of knowledge” said the emperor Akbar.

In fact, Birbal did not know what was going in the mind of Akbar. He took it as a joke and had given a reply. He tried to buy time so that Akbar will forget this.

“Oh King!”, Birbal replied,”It will take sometime to produce one pot full of knowledge”.
“Never mind. Take your own time. But, I want to teach him a lesson. He had posed me an unwanted and unreasonable question. I am least bothered about the expenses. All I want is a pot full of knowledge”.

Immediately Akbar wrote a letter to the king that, he will be sending a pot full of knowledge in a month or so.
Birbal accepted the challenge and went to his garden. He saw a pumpkin tree with branches having small pumpkin buds. Birbal took a pot and tied a small pumpkin bud into the pot. The pot was hanging on its branch with the but in it.

Days rolled on. Small pumpkin inside the pot slowly began to grow big in size. One day, it grew as big as the size of the pot itself. It was so big that, it couldnot be taken away form the pot. At that stage, Birbal cut the branch and removed the pumpkin along with the pot. He covered the pot with a cloth and brought it to emperor Akbar.

He said to the king,”Oh king! Sometime back you asked me a ‘potful of knowledge’. It is ready now”.

Birbal showed the pot. “You shall send this pot which is ‘full of knowledge’ along with the letter. The letter should contain the following message.

“we are sending a pot full of knowledge as desired by you. Take the knowledge alone without breaking the pot. The pot should remain intact. Neither the pot not the knowledge should be spoiled or damaged. The empty pot shall be returned without fail. A fine of 50,000 mohairs(gold coins) will be levied either if the contents of the pot or the pot(itself) were damaged”

Akbar wrote a letter as directed by Birbal. He sent the pot, which contained the pumpkin to the king along with the letter.

On receiving the letter and the pot, the king was astonished. He rushed to the emperor Akbar’s palace with fifty thousand gold coins. He kept them at the feet of Akbar and asked him to forgive him awkward question.

Akbar was very much pleased and happy. He appreciated Birbal for his intelligence and gave him many prizes.

Thus Birbal’s fame spread further throughout the country.
