Every day emperor Akbar used to have a stroll outside the palace with Birbal. Once, prince Kurram cried heavily and insisted that he would also accompany them. After failing in his efforts to abstain him, Akbar agreed to take him with them.

It was a hot summer day and the weather was sultry. There was no movement in the air. After going for a short distance, Akbar removed his overcoat and gave it to Birbal. On seeing this, the prince also removed his clothes and gave them to Birbal.

Birbal was following them very slowly, unable to bear the weight of the clothes.

On seeing this, Akbar wanted to mock at Birbal. He said, "What Birbal? Is it too heavy? I thought, it is just a load of an ass".

It has taken only a moment for Birbal to realize that Akbar was jovially referring him as an ass. But, he was calm, cool and collected.

He replied,"No king. This is definitely not a load of an ass. It is just a load of two asses".

Akbar realised that, Birbal indirectly called both he and his son as two asses. As both were in jovial mood, he replied with smile,"Birbal, it is very hard to out-speak you".

Once, Birbal went to see Akbar. The king was very busy working out a sum. He didnot notice Birbal and was engrossed in his sum. Suddenly he raised his head and looked at Birbal. He asked him,"Birbal, what is twelve minus four(12-4)?".

Birbal was perplexed and could not make out anything from the question.

Immediately, he replied,"Twelve minus four is Famine".

The emperor was shocked by the reply. Coming back from the jungle of mathematics, he asked Birbal,"What! twelve minus four is famine? How is that?".

Birbal clarified,"A year has got twelve months. Only four months out of them are in rainy season. If there is no rain during this period, there will definitely be famine during the rest of the period. So, if you minus four out of twelve it results into a famine".

Akbar burst into laughter on hearing these remarks.

DOG AND SON-IN-LAW

One day Akbar was walking with Birbal on the lawn. He suddenly turned ti Birbal and asked him to produce before him a person out of his relatives who is not loyal one who is not a relative to him.
Next day, Birbal brought Akbar's son-in-law and a dog to the court. Some people did not like this act of Birbal in bringing a dog to the court. The law forbade bringing a dog to the court. Without caring such comments, Birbal went straight to the king and said, "Oh king! I had brought the ones you mentioned yesterday."

"Is it? Bring them" orderde th king.

Birbal replied. " here is your son-in-law. You had your daughter married to him with gifts worth several times what he can earn in his lifetime. Yet, he speaks ill of you at your back. So, he is the ungreatful and disloyal person among your relatives. This dog, depends on you only for bread slices. It always gives first preference to you for ramaining greatful and loyal at all times. It sincerely guards your gate for a loaf of bread. So, this is the most loyal and greatful one among your non relatives."

Akbar appreciated Birbal for being bold enough to point out his son-in-law's mistake. which gave him a chance to change his attitude thereupon. Thereafter, the son-in-law stopped abusing Akbar in his absence.
